📝 Overview
Surcharging through Dash allows you to pass on card processing costs by adding a fee to card transactions. When customers pay with a surcharged card transaction, you'll keep the entirety of the transaction cost as revenue without paying card processing fees.
⚠️ Terms & Conditions: You are fully responsible for any fines, penalties, or losses arising from your failure to adhere to applicable surcharging requirements. Please review applicable laws around surcharging in your jurisdiction and card network rules before enabling this feature.

💰 Rates
Surcharging will charge an additional fee, calculated by a set rate based on geographic location, to a customer on top of the total amount of the transaction. This rate is non-configurable by the merchant.
If surcharging is added onto a transaction, you, as a merchant, will not pay card processing fees, they will be passed onto your customer. If surcharging is not applied to a card transaction for some reason, you, as the merchant, will pay the card processing fee at your normal rates.
⚠️ Important Note: Surcharging is prohibited on debit and prepaid card transactions in the United States and Canada. Customers will not be surcharged if a card is determined to be debit or prepaid in these regions.

🏦 How Refunds Work
When refunds are processed on surcharged transactions, the surcharge amount is also refunded proportionally to the customer.

When you process a refund for a surcharged transaction, the surcharge is also refunded to the customer.
Full refund: The customer receives their full original amount plus the full surcharge amount refunded.
Partial refund: If you issue a partial refund, the surcharge is recalculated proportionally based on the refunded amount. Only the portion of the surcharge corresponding to the refunded amount is returned.
🧠 Example: Partial Refund
Original payment: $100
Surcharge rate: 3%
Original surcharge: $3.00
If you refund $50:
Refunded amount: $50.00
Refunded surcharge (3% of $50): $1.50
Total refund issued: $51.50
Split invoices: If a surcharge applies to a payment split across multiple transactions, the surcharge fee is prorated across each payment proportionally.
Your costs: You will not pay card processing fees when refunding a surcharged transaction.
⚠️ Important Note: Unlinked refunds do not automatically refund the surcharge. For best results, process refunds from the original transaction record.
📊 Reporting
When surcharging is enabled, a Surcharge column appears on the Payment Batch Report. This column displays the total surcharges collected for each batch and individual surcharge amounts for each transaction, allowing you to track surcharge fees separately from transaction income.
💡 Pro Tips
🗣️ Communicate early: If you're enabling surcharging, notify customers well in advance so they can choose their payment method.
📋 Check compliance: Review your jurisdiction's rules and card network requirements before enabling surcharging. Different regions have different regulations.
🔍 Monitor debit card restrictions: Debit and prepaid cards cannot be surcharged in the United States and Canada due to card network and local regulations. Your customers using these card types will not be charged a surcharge. The facility will pay the standard card processing fee for these transactions instead.
