Google Analytics

Learn how to set up Google Analytics 4 (GA4) with the platform, including creating a GA4 property, connecting your Measurement ID, and enabling e-commerce tracking to monitor customer purchases.

Written by Angel Horowitz

πŸ”” Feature Update:

The platform will accurately capture and track the country and currency of each transaction.

πŸ“ Overview

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is Google's current analytics platform, allowing you to track visitor behavior, traffic sources, and customer activity across your website and Customer Portal. Once connected, GA4 will begin collecting data on the customers visiting your Customer Portal pages, including new vs. returning visitors, session activity, referral sources, demographics, and more.

✍️ Note: GA4 replaced Universal Analytics (UA) in July 2023. If you previously used a UA tracking ID (formatted as UA-XXXXXX-XX), you will need to complete the steps below to create a GA4 property and update your Measurement ID in the platform.

πŸ”— Connecting GA4 to Dash

Click the arrow to learn how to connect your GA4 Measurement ID

  1. Log in to your Dash admin account.

  2. Navigate to the Integrations & Add-ons page. You can access this from the Admin dropdown menu or by typing "Integrations & Add-ons" into the Global Search Box.

  3. Locate the Google Analytics tile and click the Get Started button.

  4. Enable to the Google Anlaytics and then paste the Measurement ID you copied from Google into the GA Measurement ID field.

  5. Click Save Settings.

Once saved, GA4 will begin collecting data on visitors to your Customer Portal.

✍️ Note: There is not currently a way to combine previous UA data with new GA4 data. If you want to collect data from multiple analytics sources simultaneously, if this feature is available to you, consider setting up Google Tag Manager, which allows multiple Google Analytics properties and other third-party trackers to be added at the same time.

πŸ“Š E-Commerce Tracking

Click the arrow to learn how to enable e-commerce tracking

GA4 contains a wealth of information about the customers using your Customer Portal, including new vs. returning visitors, length of stay, activities, referring sites, demographics, and more. With e-commerce tracking enabled, you can also monitor customer purchases directly within your GA4 account, categorized by GL Code.

⚠️ Important Note: The steps below reflect the e-commerce setup process at the time of writing and may need to be verified against your current Google Analytics account view. If anything looks different, reach out to [email protected] for assistance.

  1. Log in to your Google Analytics account at analytics.google.com.

  2. Navigate to your GA4 property.

  3. Enable e-commerce reporting within your GA4 account settings by selecting the On Status from the Ecommerce set-up.

πŸ’‘ Pro Tips

  • ⚠️ Allow up to 24 hours - After connecting your Measurement ID or enabling e-commerce tracking, give Google time to process before expecting data to appear in your GA4 account.

  • 🧠 Name your property clearly - Appending "GA4" to your property name (e.g., "My Organization GA4") makes it easy to distinguish from any legacy UA properties still visible in your account.

  • πŸ“Œ Save your Measurement ID - Copy your GA4 Measurement ID (G-XXXXXXXXXX) somewhere accessible before leaving Google Analytics. You will need it when connecting to the platform.

  • πŸ’¬ Running multiple trackers? - If you need to run GA4 alongside other analytics tools, Google Tag Manager is the recommended solution. It acts as a single container for multiple tags so you are not limited to one tracker at a time.

  • β›” UA IDs no longer work - If you previously entered a UA-XXXXXX-XX tracking ID in the platform, it is no longer collecting data. Replace it with your GA4 Measurement ID (G-XXXXXXXXXX) to resume tracking.

I set up GA4 but I am not seeing any data. What should I do?

Click the arrow to see the answer

GA4 can take up to 24 to 48 hours to begin displaying data after initial setup. Make sure your Measurement ID is saved correctly in the platform and that your Customer Portal is receiving traffic. If data still does not appear after 48 hours, contact [email protected].

Can I use both my old UA property and my new GA4 property at the same time?

Click the arrow to see the answer

There is not currently a supported way to combine UA and GA4 data. UA properties stopped collecting data in July 2023, so only GA4 will capture new traffic. If you need to run multiple analytics properties simultaneously, Google Tag Manager can be configured to support this.

Where do I find my GA4 Measurement ID?

Click the arrow to see the answer

In Google Analytics, go to Admin, then your GA4 property, then Data Streams, then click your web stream. Your Measurement ID (formatted as G-XXXXXXXXXX) appears in the upper-right corner of the Web stream details screen.

What data will GA4 collect from my Customer Portal?

Click the arrow to see the answer

Once connected, GA4 will track visitor behavior including new vs. returning customers, session length, referral sources, demographics, and customer purchases categorized by GL Code if e-commerce tracking is enabled.

Do I need Google Tag Manager to use Google Analytics?

Click the arrow to see the answer

No. Google Analytics can be connected directly to the platform using your Measurement ID without needing Google Tag Manager. GTM is only necessary if you want to run multiple analytics tools or tags simultaneously.
